Competing - through the eyes of a roaster
June 29, 2010, 10:49pm
I had the pleasure to witness the hareem that was the Ibrik/Cezve competition today. Amongst the belly dancing and genie in a bottle the lovely Aysin Aydogdu from our very own UK brought home the first silverware of the week.
The competition seemed to draw in a really good crowd all day which I’m sure was down to the lovely smelling coffee as well as the music and dancing.

A Huge congratulations to Boryana Kotorava (Presumably), or at the very least the Belgian barista who won the Coffee in Good Spirits competition with his flamboyant and enjoyable performance.

Also a big congratulations goes the UK Good Spirits barista, Ed Buston who performed an equally enjoyable performance and scored an incredibly close 2nd.

The rules are very simple;
And now for today’s Bingo card;
Good luck all and eyes down.

It could be argued that a skill that is required above that of making an exceptional coffee is the ability to taste an exceptional coffee and find the nuances and qualities within the cup. For that the Speciality Coffee Associations award the accolade through the Cup Tasting Championship.

In its 7th year, the competition is a judge of the competitors palette. Providing possibly the most difficult test amongst the various competitions held.
The competitor must pick, from a selection of 3 coffees, the odd one out. They must do this 8 times in total, the winner is decided by who selects the most correct coffees, if there is a draw in count then whomever completes their 8 selections that fastest is crowned the winner.
All coffees are roasted, ground and brewed to the same parameters, so the palette of the competitors are pushed to the limit.
The world cup tasting championship will be held at Caffe Culture on Friday between 9.00am and 3.00pm (9.00-15.00)
Enjoy the slurping!
